Visit Fraser Island between July and October and you\u2019re virtually guaranteed to see whales frolicking off the coast as they take a break from their long journey.[vc_gallery type=&#8221;image_grid&#8221; images=&#8221;4569&#8243; img_size=&#8221;847&#215;400&#8243;]This year, however, visitors are able to get up close and personal and swim with the whales for the first time on selected whale watching tours. Hervey Bay is the first location in Australia to enable tourists to swim with whales \u2013 and it\u2019s likely to remain the only one. Unlike many other popular whale watching spots across Oz, the whales aren\u2019t just passing through. They rest in the calm bay to recuperate from the first stage of their long trip and gather the energy for the homeward stretch, which gives tour operators ample time to observe and approach them carefully. Boats have to keep a distance of 100m from the whales, but are now allowed to drop swimmers in to the water to carefully approach and swim with the whales.<\/p>\n<p>Whether or not the swim with whales experience is here to stay remains to be seen, so book yours while you can.
