Our adventure experiences are for adults only, sorry. We recommend checking out other options for family-friendly activities on K’gari!
Yes, the freshwater lakes on K’gari Fraser Island are some of the safest places to swim! These stunning lakes are crystal-clear and free from dangerous marine life. While a few lakes might have some wildlife (like turtles or fish), there’s absolutely nothing that will harm you. In fact, many visitors find these lakes incredibly relaxing and beautiful for a swim.
Yes, mosquitoes can be found on Fraser Island, but they’re not a huge nuisance, especially on the east side where our Eco Retreat and Haven are located. However, during the summer months, March Flies can be more persistent, so it’s a good idea to bring along some insect repellent to stay comfortable. Most people don’t find the mosquitoes to be a significant problem, but it’s always best to be prepared!
If you’re booking a tour, we only offer pick-up and drop-off from Rainbow Beach. However, if you have your own 4WD, you’re free to use both the Rainbow Beach and Hervey Bay barge entry/exit points, giving you more flexibility for your trip.
If you’re hiring one of our 4WDs, it must be picked up and returned to Noosa. However, if you’re booking a tour, we only offer pick-up and drop-off from Noosa or Rainbow Beach. If you have your own 4WD, you’re welcome to use either of the barge entry/exit points, giving you the flexibility to arrive from Rainbow Beach and depart to Hervey Bay.
Yes, you can book a private room! However, availability is limited, so we recommend booking at least 3 months in advance to secure your spot. As it’s a popular option, the earlier you book, the better your chances of securing a private room.
Absolutely! You’re welcome to bring alcohol on your tour. Just a quick heads-up: please avoid glass bottles, as they can break during the journey to the island. And remember, the law still applies on “island time,” so please drink responsibly!
We don’t have a campsite, as all our accommodation is set up for you in our comfy tents or cabins. We provide everything you need, so there’s no need to bring your own camping gear. Just pack light and leave the rest to us—enjoy your stay without the hassle of setup or pack down!
Yes! You can change your pick-up location up to 12 hours before your tour departs. Simply send us a message through your booking portal with your updated pick-up spot, and we’ll send you a new confirmation with the details. You can also check the pick-up times and locations here.
Absolutely! This is a great option if you’re continuing your travels north or south after the tour. You can bring all your luggage with you, and we’ll transfer it to your end destination, so you don’t have to worry about hauling it along the way!
Yes, absolutely! We’re lucky to have a campfire at the Eco Retreat, and it’s free for you to enjoy. We supply firewood and even marshmallows—perfect for a cozy evening around the fire. YUM!
Yes, you can enjoy a campfire at The Haven! However, you’ll need to bring your own firewood. Please ensure the fire is attended at all times, keep it to a moderate size, and follow all safety precautions to help preserve the environment.
Yes, you can! Many of our guests book out the entire Eco Retreat for family get-togethers or special events. We offer 10% off when you book all the tents for 3 nights or more. The Eco Retreat can accommodate up to 44 people. Give us a call to learn more about our group accommodation options!
Absolutely! You can book both properties at The Haven, which are located right next to each other. Together, they can accommodate up to 9 guests in total. It’s a fantastic way to have the whole place to yourselves for a private getaway!
While the ocean surrounding Fraser Island is beautiful, swimming in the sea is strongly discouraged due to a variety of safety risks. The strong rip tides, presence of jellyfish, and sharks make it unsafe for swimming. It’s best to avoid the ocean and instead enjoy the freshwater lakes, which are not only much safer but also offer crystal-clear waters and peaceful surroundings.
Absolutely, but not on a guided tour or in a hire car. The West Coast can be pretty tricky to navigate, and help can be far away if you run into trouble. You can drive to Kingfisher Resort on the west side in one of our hire 4WDs, but beyond that, it’s mostly mangroves or tough, challenging tracks. If you’re new to 4WDing on the island, we’d recommend sticking to the easier areas for now to avoid any hassles. Keep it safe and have a blast!
Nope, you don’t have to drive if you’re booking a tour with us! Every pilot needs a good co-pilot, right? 😎
On our tours, you’ll have the chance to sit back, relax, and enjoy the ride while your guide takes the wheel. You’ll still get to enjoy the adventure, communicate via walkie-talkie, and be part of the fun while soaking in the stunning surroundings of K’gari. Plus, you’ll have plenty of time to snap photos and enjoy the sights without worrying about driving on the sand. 🌊🚙
So, whether you want to take the wheel or just kick back and enjoy the ride, we’ve got you covered! 🎶
No need to bring your own! All hotel linens are provided, including bottom sheets, top sheets, doona/duvet covers, pillows, and pillowcases. In winter, we also provide blankets and hot water bottles to keep you cozy.
No need to bring plastic bottles! K’gari Fraser Island has some of the freshest water in the world. We encourage you to bring a reusable water bottle and drink straight from the island’s clean, natural sources. The island’s water is amazing, and it helps us reduce plastic waste, which is great for both the environment and future generations!
No, our vehicles don’t have air-conditioning. We prefer to roll the windows down and enjoy the fresh sea breeze—it’s better for you and the planet! Plus, it’s part of the full K’gari (Fraser Island) experience!
Nope! Our vehicles don’t have air conditioning. We prefer to roll down the windows and enjoy the fresh sea breeze—it’s not only better for your comfort, but also for the environment!
Absolutely! We cater for all dietary requirements—whether you’re vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, dairy-free, or even a “chicken-eating vegetarian” (yes, we’ve seen it all!). Simply let us know your needs during the booking process, and we’ll make sure you’re well-fed and happy throughout your adventure.
Yes, absolutely! To get around Fraser Island, you’ll need a 4WD or be prepared to explore on foot. You can either hire a 4WD, join a tour from the mainland, or take the Fraser Island taxi service if you prefer to walk part of the way. Give us a call and we’ll help you figure out the best option for your adventure!
Unfortunately, we don’t offer a pick-up service from Hervey Bay as it’s a bit too far north. However, there is a morning bus that leaves Hervey Bay and arrives in Rainbow Beach in time for our tour, though this cannot be guaranteed.
If you need to get to Hervey Bay after your trip, you can catch the late afternoon bus from Rainbow Beach, which will get you into Hervey Bay in the early evening.
We only pick up from main accommodation facilities in Noosa, not residential addresses or Airbnbs. Give us a call or send an email, and we’ll check the nearest pick-up point to where you’re staying!
Yes, we do! If you have a group of 10 or more people, we can arrange a private tour just for you.
To get started, simply complete an enquiry form on our Contact Us page, and we’ll get in touch with you to discuss how we can tailor the perfect adventure tour for your group. Whether it’s a special event, a family getaway, or just a crew looking for a unique Fraser Island experience, we’ve got you covered!
Let’s make your island adventure unforgettable! 🌴✨
Yes, we provide eco-friendly shampoo, conditioner, and body wash in all accommodations, as our facility uses a septic and water treatment system. We ask that you use these provided toiletries to help us maintain the island’s natural beauty. Toothpaste is fine to bring, but please be mindful of what we put back into the environment.
Yes, absolutely! We provide all the essential recovery gear when you hire a 4WD with us. This includes snatch straps, Maxtrax, and a tyre pressure gauge. If you need anything beyond that, we’re here to help—along with a list of contact numbers for assistance if needed during your adventure.
No sorry! Our experiences are for 18 years plus.
Super close! The Eco Retreat is no more than 100 meters from the stunning 75 Mile Beach, with beautiful sea views to enjoy.
Super close! The Haven is also no more than 100 meters from 75 Mile Beach, offering beautiful sea views for you to soak in.
When you arrive at Hook Point on the southern tip of the island, the retreat is about a 40-minute drive north along the beach. As you head up, you’ll enter a 40km zone. Look out for the second turnoff after the beach—this leads to Second Valley Eurong. If you reach Eurong, you’ve gone too far. Just turn around, head back south for about 200 meters, and you’ll find us as the first place on the right as you turn into the village.
If you’re coming from Wangoolba Creek or Kingfisher, follow the signs to Eurong and take a right when you hit the beach.
From Hook Point – Head north along Eastern Beach towards Poyungan Rocks, located between Eurong and Happy Valley.
From Kingfisher – Take Cornwall Break Road to reach Eastern Beach, then head towards Poyungan Rocks, also between Eurong and Happy Valley.
Just south of the rocks, you’ll spot a lone palm tree next to a driveway—this marks the entrance to The Haven. Look for the sign to confirm you’re in the right place!
Note: Mobile reception is limited in this area, so it’s a good idea to save these directions or your booking confirmation on your phone in case you don’t have access to Google Maps. If you’re on Telstra, you should be fine for signal.
Booking early is always the way to go, especially during our busiest months from October to April and around School Holidays. To ensure you don’t miss out, we recommend booking as early as possible.
- For specific dates: We advise booking at least 60 days in advance.
- For more flexible plans: Booking 14-30 days in advance should usually do the trick.
- Last-minute plans: If you’re a spontaneous traveller, check availability closer to your desired date. You can even add yourself to our waitlist or drop us a message on WhatsApp—sometimes we’ve got a sneaky spot available!
If you have any questions or if the trip is fully booked online, don’t hesitate to reach out. Give us a call or send us a message, and we’ll do everything we can to help!
When planning a family trip to K’gari (Fraser Island), it’s important to consider the presence of dingoes, which are part of the island’s natural environment. While kids aged 7 and older tend to have the most fun, the long and sometimes rugged drives around the island can be challenging for younger children. The experience can be a bit hit or miss for families—some kids love it, while others may find it less enjoyable. Considering the cost and logistics of the trip, we recommend waiting until your children are a bit older to make sure everyone has a more relaxed and rewarding adventure on the island!
Our groups can accommodate up to 30 people during peak season, spread across 4 vehicles to ensure comfort and ample space for everyone. In the off-peak season, group sizes are typically around 20 people, offering a more relaxed and intimate experience.
We carefully manage group sizes to maintain a friendly, enjoyable atmosphere while making the most of your K’gari adventure! 🌿
The Eco Retreat has 7 Glamping Tents, which can be set up as King, Twin, Triple, or Quad rooms. If you’d prefer a private Glamping Tent, you can book one for an additional $300 for 2 nights, which can be added to any 3-day tour.
If you’re joining us on a tour, each 4WD can fit up to 8 people.
If you’re hiring a 4WD from us, the maximum is 5 people, giving you plenty of space in the back for your luggage and comfort during the drive.
For your trip, please pack light with a small weekend bag weighing no more than 10kg. This is essential for comfort and convenience during the tour.
- If you’re being picked up from Noosa and dropped off at Rainbow Beach (or vice versa), we can transfer your larger bags for free.
- Larger bags are not permitted on the tour itself, but if you’re starting and returning to Noosa, we offer free luggage storage at our depot near Noosa.
- Hervey Bay pick-ups are not available as it’s too far north, but you can easily use the Greyhound bus service between Hervey Bay and Rainbow Beach.
Pack light, and we’ll take care of the rest!
TOURS
If you’re booking a tour with us, everything is covered in the price—yes, even the fun! The only extra costs you might want to budget for are things like a few cold beers, a souvenir or two, or maybe an indulgent ice cream from the local shop. Totally up to you!
ACCOMMODATION
When booking just accommodation on the island, you’ll need to factor in some additional costs. This includes food, drinks, a 4WD (if you’re not hiring one with us), a vehicle access permit, return barge tickets, fuel, clothes, and of course, a fully stocked beach bag! It’s all about being prepared for an amazing stay.
4WD HIRE
Our 4WD hire packages include everything you need to hit the island—vehicle access permits, barge transfers, and recovery gear. If you choose one of our hire + accommodation packages, we’ll also throw in an audio guide for your adventure around the island!
The best way to book is always to BOOK DIRECT! Why? Because when you book directly with us, you cut out the middleman and get the best deal—no commission fees for third-party agents. That means more of your money goes straight to supporting the local community and keeping things sustainable.
Of course, booking with a travel agent is an option if you’re planning a big Australia-wide adventure. But let’s be real—finding a good travel agent can be tricky, and they often don’t have the same level of feedback or reviews as tour operators do. We’ve compiled a list of trusted agents to get you started, but booking direct with us is always the most efficient and rewarding way to go.
By booking with us directly, you also get some great perks! Our terms and conditions allow you to change your travel date up to 2 times for free (as long as it’s not within 10 days of your trip). No hassle, no stress!
You can get to K’gari Fraser Island via Rainbow Beach/Inskip Point or Hervey Bay.
- From Brisbane/Sunshine Coast: It’s best to head to Rainbow Beach, where you can purchase your barge ticket and vehicle access permit at the Shell Petrol Station in Rainbow Beach. Once you’re on the island, it’s a 40-minute drive up the beach to our retreat.
From Hervey Bay: You’ll need to book the barge in advance since there are only 4-5 departures per day, depending on the season. After arriving on the island, it’s about an hour inland drive to reach us. We strongly recommend catching a daytime barge instead of a late one, as driving on the island at night can be hazardous.
Not at all! While we don’t offer tours in other languages, our guides are experienced in working with guests who speak little English. They’ll make every effort to communicate clearly and ensure you have an enjoyable experience. We also recommend using translation apps if needed to help with understanding key information.
K’gari Fraser Island, like many wild and rugged places, does have some natural risks, but with the right knowledge and preparation, it’s an unforgettable experience for all the right reasons. The island is home to a range of wildlife, including Dingoes, snakes, and jellyfish, as well as challenging driving conditions, especially if you’re not familiar with off-road 4WD terrain.
The safest way to explore K’gari Fraser Island is by joining a guided tour, where you’ll benefit from experienced guides who are well-versed in local wildlife and safety protocols. Our guides are experts in navigating the island’s rough tracks and have up-to-date certifications, licenses, and first aid training to ensure a safe and enjoyable adventure. If you stick to the right guidelines and follow expert advice, Fraser Island can be a spectacular and safe destination.
Yes, there are several fuel stations across the island, including at Eurong, Happy Valley, Cathedral Beach, Kingfisher Bay, and Orchid Beach. However, fuel on the island is more expensive than on the mainland, so it’s highly recommended that you fill up your tank before heading to Fraser Island to avoid paying premium prices.
Driving a 4WD is just as safe as driving any other vehicle, as long as you follow the right safety practices. 4WD driving can be more technical than regular 2WD driving, especially on sand, so it’s important to know the basics. Before you hire one of our vehicles, our team will give you a thorough safety briefing, show you a safety video, and explain how the vehicle works, including what to do if you get stuck in the sand. Ultimately, it’s up to you as the driver to stay focused, follow all safety precautions, and drive with care at all times.
Our hire vehicles are always in constant 4WD and are some of the most reliable and safest in Australia—the Toyota 80 Series. Plus, you’ll stay connected with your guide via walkie-talkie, and you’re never more than 500m behind the lead vehicle, so you can relax knowing we’ve got your back on your island adventure.
If you’re not sure about self-driving, we also offer guided tours to K’gari (Fraser Island) that take care of everything, so you can simply enjoy the ride!
For your safety, our Stand-Up Paddleboards are strictly for use in the freshwater lakes only and are not permitted in the sea. The sea conditions can be unpredictable and we want to ensure you have the safest and most enjoyable experience.
Additionally, our paddleboards are exclusively for tour groups and are not available for individual or outside use. This helps us maintain the quality and safety of the equipment for everyone who joins us.
If you’re looking for a serene paddleboarding experience, the lakes are the perfect place to enjoy the peaceful waters and stunning surroundings!
Yes, June to August is the official Australian winter (and also the dry season), and it can get quite cold on the island, especially at night. We recommend bringing warm clothes for the evenings when the temperatures tend to drop. Don’t worry though, we provide plenty of blankets and hot water bottles to keep you warm during the cooler months!
K’gari Fraser Island is an incredible place to visit, but like any wilderness, it comes with its own set of safety considerations. Here’s what you need to know to stay safe during your adventure:
DRIVING
Driving on K’gari requires caution and skill. The island’s unique terrain, including sand tracks and uneven surfaces, requires a 4WD vehicle. Regardless of where you’re driving, safety practices are essential, and we ensure all guests are given comprehensive safety briefings before heading out.
If you’re joining a guided tour, your guide will lead the way and provide support, so you can relax and enjoy the ride. For those self-driving, it’s important to follow all instructions carefully and be aware of the road conditions, especially when driving on sand.
WILDLIFE
While Australia is home to some of the world’s most dangerous animals, Fraser Island’s wildlife is generally not a threat if you follow some basic safety guidelines.
- Dingoes: These wild dogs are one of the island’s most famous inhabitants. While they can be curious, they typically pose no danger if you respect their space. It’s important to follow the guidelines for dingo safety, including securing your food and not approaching them.
- Snakes and Spiders: Though K’gari is home to some of Australia’s more dangerous reptiles and insects, they are rarely encountered. The dense bushland makes it unlikely to cross paths with them. Just be cautious if you’re venturing into the wilderness, and watch where you step.
WATER SPORTS
Water activities on K’gari are a highlight, but safety should always come first.
- Swimming: Do not swim in the ocean on the island due to the strong rips and the presence of sharks. While the ocean can be enticing, it’s not worth the risk. Stick to the freshwater lakes, which are far safer and just as beautiful.
- Paddleboarding: Paddleboarding is an amazing way to explore the island’s lakes, but always be mindful of your surroundings, especially in deeper or faster-moving water.
In summary, K’gari Fraser Island can be safe and enjoyable with the right preparation and precautions. By following the safety guidelines and staying alert, you can make the most of your adventure while ensuring your safety!
At Drop Bear’s K’gari Adventures, we aim to deliver an exhilarating, high-energy experience, and our tours are designed with physical challenges in mind. For the best experience, we recommend that guests be between 18 and 40 years old.
The tours involve a jam-packed itinerary, 4WD vehicles with a 60cm ground clearance (so stepping in and out can be tricky), and physically demanding activities, so a good level of fitness is important to fully enjoy the adventure.
If you’re outside of this age range but still keen to join, we encourage you to get in touch with us before booking. We’d love to chat about the specifics of the tour to ensure it aligns with your preferences and capabilities.
Our main priority is your safety and ensuring you have a fun, memorable time, so don’t hesitate to reach out if you have any questions. We look forward to welcoming you to K’gari!
Yes, our Glamping and Beach Cabin options at The Eco Retreat are safely located within the Dingo Fence, so you can relax and enjoy your stay without worry. The area is surrounded by a black gate, and we have our own private beach access. When entering the “dingo safe” zone, you’ll drive over an electric cattle grid for added security.
No, the Haven at Poyungan is located outside the Dingo Fence, which means families with children under 18 are not permitted to stay at this accommodation. Guests in this area must take extra precautions due to the presence of wild dingoes to ensure everyone’s safety.
Yes, both kitchens at The Haven are fully equipped with everything you need for a comfortable stay. We’ve got two gas BBQs, two gas hobs, plates, cups, cutlery, chopping boards, knives, pots, pans, and two fridge/freezers, plus plenty of cupboard storage for your food and essentials.
There is no doctor on the island, but we are fully equipped with a first aid kit to handle minor injuries. In the event of a serious emergency, arrangements can be made for an airlift to the nearest medical facility. Your safety is our top priority, and we’re prepared to assist in any way we can.
The beauty of The Haven is its secluded paradise vibe, so there isn’t a restaurant within walking distance. The closest options are in Eurong, about a 10-minute drive south, or in Happy Valley, 10 minutes to the north. However, we strongly recommend avoiding driving on the beach at night, so it’s best to plan your meals in advance or enjoy the peace and quiet of your private retreat.
Yes, there are small shops located in Eurong, Happy Valley, Cathedral Beach, Kingfisher Bay, and Orchid Beach. These shops offer a limited selection of essentials, such as fresh and dry foods, confectionery, alcohol, tobacco, and souvenirs. However, we strongly recommend that you stock up on groceries and supplies before arriving on the island, as prices can be higher and availability limited.
Yes, we’ve got you covered! Our Glamping Tents are equipped with pedestal fans, and our Beach Cabins have ceiling fans, all complemented by a refreshing ocean breeze. However, there is no air conditioning, as the Eco Retreat operates on an off-grid power system, and we prioritize sustainability while still ensuring a comfortable experience for our guests.
Yes, both houses at The Haven have pedestal fans, keeping things cool with a refreshing ocean breeze. However, we don’t have air conditioning due to our off-grid power system. We focus on providing a sustainable and comfortable stay, with the natural elements helping to keep the space cool.
Yes! While we rely on solar power, which is abundant in sunny Australia, there may be some impact on power during rainy days. Don’t worry though, we’ve got a backup generator that kicks in, ensuring you always have power during your stay.
Yes! Eurong is just a 5-minute walk away, where you’ll find a resort, restaurant, pub, and bakery. The closest natural attraction is Lake Wabby, located just a few kilometers down the beach.
While the Haven is centrally located on K’gari Fraser Island, the nearest sight within walking distance is Lake Wabby, which is about 5km up the beach. For other sights, you’ll need a 4WD or can arrange transport with the Fraser Island Taxi Service to explore the island.
While The Haven is centrally located on Fraser Island, the nearest notable attraction within walking distance is Lake Wabby, which is about a 5km walk up the beach. It’s a beautiful and popular spot but requires a bit of a hike to get there. For other sights around the island, you’ll need a 4WD or to arrange transport through the Fraser Island Taxi Service to reach them.
Mobile service is limited on K’gari. Telstra offers the best chance of connection, but it’s not always reliable. This is a perfect opportunity to disconnect and fully immerse yourself in the island’s natural beauty!
Yes, we have plenty of parking at The Haven for all of our guests’ 4WDs. Just a small request: please disengage 4WD when driving on our beautiful grass to help preserve the area.
Yes, all tents have power points available for use during the day and evening. However, they can’t be left on overnight. There are also plenty of power points in the kitchens for your convenience.
No, there is no public bus service on Fraser Island. However, there is a taxi service run by our lovely friends, Steve & Lisa. If you are not planning to hire a 4WD and need transport around the island, you can get in touch with them directly to arrange your travel. They can help with getting you to and from various locations on the island.
At our Eco Retreat, we embrace the idea of a digital detox—so there is no Wi-Fi. It’s the perfect time to disconnect, relax, and immerse yourself in the peaceful surroundings of K’gari. At the Haven, however, we do offer Wi-Fi, but we still encourage you to take a break from your devices and fully enjoy your time in paradise!
The kitchens in each house at The Haven are fully equipped with:
- Gas stove top/oven
- Fridge/freezer
- BBQ
- Pots and pans
- Plates, bowls, cups, glasses
- Tupperware
- Chopping boards
- Utensils
- Tea, coffee, sugar, salt, pepper, olive oil, and a small complementary milk
As The Haven runs on solar power, we kindly ask that guests be mindful of their energy usage. You won’t find kettles, toasters, or microwaves, but don’t worry—we’ve got whistling kettles, stove-top toasters, and coffee plungers. We recommend planning meals around not having an oven or microwave for a more eco-friendly stay.
No problem! If you’re unsure of your pick-up location when booking, simply select any pick-up point from the list, and just let us know your exact location later. You can change it up to 12 hours before departure by calling or emailing us with your new details.

We understand that things don’t always go as planned, and we do our best to be flexible. However, to ensure we stay on schedule and provide a great experience for all guests, we may need to proceed without you if delays impact the itinerary significantly. So please make every effort to be on time!

We’re happy to accommodate extended stays and cater to your specific holiday preferences! If you’d like to stay longer on the island after your tour or need a longer 4WD hire package, we can arrange that for you.
Additional costs may include:
- Taxi service / 4WD hire
- Ferry ticket
- Extra nights’ accommodation at our Beachcamp Retreat
- Possibly a vehicle access permit (if hiring a 4WD)
If you’re over 25 years old and have held a valid driver’s license for at least 3 years, you’re eligible to hire a 4WD with us.
Ah, the weather! We get it – rain on your holiday isn’t ideal, but here’s the thing: Fraser Island is actually beautiful in the rain. Over the years, we’ve learned to embrace the wet weather, and here’s why:
- Wildlife: Rain brings the wildlife out and makes the island feel alive.
- Lakes & Tracks: The rain fills up our stunning lakes and makes the tracks easier to navigate.
- Vibes: It just adds to the adventure!
We’ve got years of experience helping guests have an amazing time regardless of the weather. We’ll work with you to plan an itinerary that takes into account weather, tides, and the season.
If the weather is seriously bad (we’re talking cyclonic conditions), and it’s unsafe to travel, we will reach out to you and make arrangements to either postpone your trip or refund your deposit.
Be sure to check out our full terms and conditions for our bad weather policy for all the details.

One of the main draws of visiting K’gari (Fraser Island) is the 4WD adventure! As the world’s largest sand island, getting to the different lakes and creeks means quite a bit of driving. While we don’t offer specific experiences for families with young children, we do recommend being cautious if you’re thinking about hiring a 4WD with kids under 3 years old, unless you’re an experienced driver. The inland tracks can be really bumpy, and kids either love the ride or find it a bit much. Plus, it’s crucial to stay alert for dingoes while you’re driving around. If your kids are up for the adventure, it can be an unforgettable experience—but it’s definitely not for the faint-hearted!
Driving on K’gari (Fraser Island) is an epic experience, but it’s not for the faint-hearted. The island’s terrain can be tricky, so it’s important to know your limits and choose the right experience for your level of expertise. If you’re new to 4WDing, we highly recommend booking a guided tour for peace of mind. If you’re a seasoned road tripper, our self-drive 4WD and accommodation packages are the perfect way to explore!
GUIDED K’GARI FRASER ISLAND TOURS
Booking a guided tour is by far the safest and most stress-free way to explore the island. Whether you want to drive yourself or be driven, our guides will lead the way, so you can enjoy the fun without the worry. We provide fully-equipped 4WDs, including the reliable Toyota Landcruisers, which are automatic and built for sand driving—perfect for tackling K’gari’s challenging tracks.
To drive one of our 4WDs on a guided tour, you’ll need to:
- Be 21+ and have a full/open driver’s license.
- Have held your license for at least 12 months.
- Carry your photo ID card license with you. If your license isn’t in English, you’ll need an international translation.
SELF-DRIVE K’GARI FRASER ISLAND EXPERIENCES
If you’re looking to go solo, hiring a 4WD from us (or another rental company) is the way to go. Our vehicles are more than capable of handling Fraser Island’s rugged terrain. If you’re new to the island, we recommend choosing an automatic—it makes sand driving much easier, which is why we only offer automatic Landcruisers for hire.
To hire a 4WD, you must:
- Be 25+ years old.
- Be confident in handling a large vehicle.
- Pay attention to the safety briefing before heading out.
If you’re bringing your own 4WD, make sure it’s up to the job. Not all 4WDs are created equal—AWDs won’t cut it. Your vehicle should have plenty of clearance, tires that can be deflated to 20-24 psi (no low profiles), and low-range gearing.
THE LAW
Always carry your physical driver’s license with you—it’s illegal to drive in Queensland without it. If you’re pulled over by the police on K’gari, fines are a real possibility, so remember to slow down, wear your seatbelt, and avoid any costly surprises.
K’gari Fraser Island is teeming with wildlife! You might encounter wild dingoes, goannas, and various bird species, especially migrating whales between July and October. While snakes and spiders are also common, they are usually not a threat if you keep your distance. Whether you’re watching birds soar, observing goannas basking, or spotting a whale off the coast, seeing wildlife in its natural habitat is an experience you’ll never forget.

Steps to Follow:
- We will send you the video link before your trip.
- Watch the video to familiarize yourself with important safety information regarding driving on Fraser Island.

We recommend waiting until you’re closer to your travel date to watch and sign, as this will help you retain the critical information when you need it the most.
Safe travels and enjoy your Fraser Island adventure! 🚙🌴
In Noosa, we offer free on-street parking right outside Drop Bear HQ for guests joining a tour or hiring a 4WD. Our address is 3 Sanders Street, Noosaville, 4565.
In Rainbow Beach, you can park for free on either Cypress Ave or Spectrum Street, close to the Shell Petrol Station, where we do our 10am pick-up for tours.
Lake McKenzie and Lake Birrabeen are two of the most stunning lakes on the island and perfect spots for SUPs and floaties—peaceful and serene! You can also take them to Lake Allom and Lake Boomanjin, but we recommend skipping Lake Wabby due to the 2km inland walk to reach it.
For something a little different, Eli Creek is the island’s “lazy river”—it pumps out 4 million litres of fresh water into the ocean every hour. It’s the perfect place to float along and take in the tranquil surroundings. Both kids and adults will love it!
The 4WD pickup is from Drop Bear HQ, located at 3 Sanders Street, Noosaville.
Pick-up times are tide-dependent, but our drop-off is always by 5pm or before last light, depending on the time of year.
The closest lake to The Haven is Lake Wabby, which is about 5km up the beach from us. You’ll need to take a 2km walk inland to reach it. If you’re looking to visit Lake McKenzie or Lake Birrabeen, they are around a 45-minute to 1-hour drive inland
